A Catholic priest was yesterday shot dead by suspected bandits in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County sparking fear and tension among residents of Kerio Valley region.
Father Aloice Cheruiyot Bett of Tot Parish was attacked and killed while on his way to conduct a church service, according to police reports.
Confirming the incident, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said, "The priest was heading to a church mass when he was ambushed and fatally shot by criminals believed to be livestock thieves." Commander Mulinge added that investigations are underway to track down the attackers. "We have launched a serious operation to pursue the suspects involved in this heinous act," he said. "Security officers are on the ground working to maintain peace and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice." The incident comes as a curfew of six pm has been put in the area and security operations continue in parts of Kerio Valley to flush out armed bandits and restore stability.
Police have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further attacks.
