The National Assembly Committee on Regional Integration has called for enhanced diplomatic and economic relations between Kenya and Tanzania, emphasizing the need to uphold unity and cooperation within the East African Community (EAC).
Speaking during a consultative meeting with officials from the State Department for East African Community under the Ministry of EAC, ASALs, and Regional Development, Committee Chairperson Hon.
Irene Mayaka underscored the importance of mutual respect and regional solidarity, particularly in the wake of recent tensions involving cross-border civil society actors.
The deliberation comes amid claims by Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan activist Agatha Atuahira that they were allegedly assaulted by Tanzanian authorities while on route to attend the court proceedings of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu. "We must remember that the East African Community is built on the foundation of unity, peace, and economic cooperation," said Hon.
