At least eight people have been confirmed dead from the June 25 protests that spread across the country to commemorate the dozens killed during last year's anti-finance bill.

Kicking off the death count this year was a protester who was shot in Matuu, Machakos County, when police opened fire at a group of protesters who attempted to breach a police station.

While confirming the report, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) confirmed that eight others were injured during those protests.

In Nairobi, Kenya Power confirmed that a guard attached to its Stima Plaza headquarters had also been shot while on duty at around 4.30pm and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
