Chief Justice Martha Koome has penned a heartfelt tribute to Catherine Nyamato, the first-ever female Member of Parliament from the Gusii region.

In a statement on August 7, CJ Koome eulogised Nyamato as a trailblazer who made waves in championing for women's rights.

Nyamato, who passed on July 16, served in Parliament between 1997 and 2002 as a nominated MP under President Daniel Arap Moi's then-ruling KANU party. "On behalf of the Judiciary, and on my own behalf, I join the nation and the women's movement in mourning the loss of a trailblazer and a steadfast champion of women's rights, Hon Catherine Nyamato.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched," Koome stated in her tribute.
