Vihiga County has planted at least 1,500 bamboo seedlings at Kaimosi Wetlands in Shamakhokho Ward, Hamisi Subcounty, during celebrations marking World Wetlands Day.

Governor Dr.  Wilber Ottichilo led the county staff and the locals in the exercise that is aimed at preserving the wetland in a bid to conserve the natural ecosystem.

The governor, who is the Chairman of the environment and climate change committee at the Council of Governors (COG), urged the residents to plant more trees so as to be able to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.

He decried that most wetlands were degraded due to encroachment, which threatens the water cycle of receiving, storing, releasing, and regulating the flow of rivers and streams.
