The human rights community and the nation are mourning the sudden demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, the chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).  Her death, which occurred on Friday, January 3, 2025, after a short illness, was announced in a statement by the commission on Saturday. "It is with shock and deep sorrow that I inform you of the demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede.

Her untimely death is a big blow to the Commission and the nation at large," said Dr Raymond Nyeris, vice-chairperson of the KNCHR.

He added: "During this period of mourning, we send our message of condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and all those who knew Roseline.

May the memories of her exceptional service bring comfort and strength in this difficult time." President William Ruto joined the nation in mourning the loss of Odede, describing her as a "formidable human rights champion." "She was a distinguished campaigner for a more equal and fairer society.
