The County Assembly of Embu has commenced investigations into an incident where an unattended expectant mother was forced to deliver on the floor at Kiritiri Level 4 Hospital in Mbeere South Constituency last week without medical assistance.
The incident took place on the night of 6th February prompting a huge uproar from the public and subsequent suspension of the clinical officer who was on duty that night.
The matter was brought to the attention of the County Legislature upon resumption from long recess on Tuesday by Muminji Ward Representative Newton Kariuki Kariuki alleged that clinical officers and other medical practitioners had left the hospital unmanned and gone on a drinking binge following a power outage.
Kariuki said it was disheartening that a hospital with a large catchment area had no functional standby backup to supply electricity during blackouts, adding that preliminary investigations indicated that the available power generator was faulty and had no fuel.
