Sections of the Nairobi National Park are on fire. The blaze comes barely a week since an inferno broke out at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) last Friday night. According to various videos abd images seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the inferno can be spotted near the Mlolongo area The pictures show a huge blaze of red and yellow flames, with black smoke. It's unclear at the moment how much of the park is burning, and how much the fire has spread. Unverified reports indicate the blaze begun as a small bush fire but has quickly spread. In the video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the fire starts near the Standard Gauge Railway line and is spreading quickly. Authorities are yet to issue any statements on the fire.
However a group calling itself 'Friends of the Nairobi National Park' says firefighters from the Kenya Wildlife Service are on the scene. The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) had warned that the dry nature of most forests and grasslands has made them vulnerable to bush fires. In it's statement on Thursday, KFS suspended all burning of garbage near grasslands and forests unless with express authorisation. More to follow.
