The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned an incident where a police officer was allegedly captured on video deleting footage from an NTV camera crew in Majengo, Nairobi, on Wednesday.  According to the Nation, police officers blocked a photographer from accessing his camera that was located in their ban while another officer allegedly deleted footage captured during the chaotic events in Majengo. "A police officer blocks a photographer from accessing his camera as another officer deletes footage recorded by NTV crew during protests at Majengo area, Nairobi," Nation said in a tweet.

This is despite the Constitution guaranteeing the freedom of the press.

The journalists were in the area covering the protests that broke out this morning following the alleged fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy, identified as Ibrahim Ramadhan, during a police operation on Tuesday night.  Police allegedly caught deleting footage from an NTV camera crew during Majengo protests on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Daily Nation In a statement, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said, "As a service, we are gravely concerned and strongly condemn such misconduct." The police say they have launched an investigation into the matter, adding that "firm and decisive action will be taken against any officer found to have engaged in misconduct." Adding, "The National Police Service maintains a cordial relationship with the media and is committed to safeguarding and promoting media freedom, as well as protecting journalists in Kenya, in line with the Constitution and international standards." The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) reported that during recent protests, eight individuals suffered gunshot wounds inflicted by police, resulting in two fatalities.  According to KHRC, six of the injured were admitted to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment.
