The Chairperson Kenya National Parents Association Migori chapter, Julius Kiberenge, has urged the government to prepare senior secondary school (SSS) teachers before the transition of grade nine students in 2026.
Kiberenge said the Ministry of Education and Teacher's Service Commissions (TSC) should train high school teachers on competency-based curriculum (CBC) as the 8-4-4 system nears its end. "We want the Ministry of Education to prepare our senior secondary school teachers before 2026 when grade nine students will be joining senior secondary school," Kiberenge said.
He pointed out that there was a serious shortage of JSS teachers, learning materials and teachers' training during the first-year transition of learners from grade six to grade seven, which should not be repeated as the country prepares for the first transition of junior secondary students to senior schools. "We want the government to employ more teachers and make them conversant with the syllabus of CBC in senior schools to avoid what was witnessed during the transition of grades six to seven in junior secondary school," Kiberenge said.
The official, at the same time, urged the government to release capitation money in time to normalize the daily operations of schools across the country. "Headteachers have no funds to run the operations of the schools and in many instances, parents blame teachers when they hear that the government has released capitation money, while in real sense the money is too little to run the institutions for a full term," stressed Kiberenge.
