A new report shows that married women account for 80 percent of all reported abortion cases in the country. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) report, released today estimates that at least 792,694 induced abortions took place in Kenya in 2023.
The primary reasons cited are a lack of desire for additional children, financial pressures, and the pursuit of career goals. In the survey, done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Guttmacher Institute, women aged 24 to 34 accounted for the largest share of abortions (41.8 per cent), followed by those over 35 (15.6 per cent) and adolescents under 20 (13.6 per cent).
Overall, in that year, some 2.8 million pregnancies were reporter.
