Kenyan consumers are yet again expected to dig deeper into their pockets when buying sugar, as the prices are set to go up following the introduction of a new tax on the sweetener.

The government intends to impose a 4 per cent sugar development levy (SDL) on domestic and imported sugar that will take effect on February 1, 2025.

This part of the new legislation under the sugar reforms that came into law late last year.

Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has gazetted the Sugar Development Levy Order 2025, which will see prices of sugar edge up at least 4 per cent.
