Kenya's vehicle trade has slammed into a major roadblock after the government failed to pay number plate suppliers, leaving over 7,000 cars stuck in the Mombasa port and the container freight stations (CFSs).

The Kenya Car Importers Association has blamed the government for the major challenge, saying that not paying the dealers is affecting the industry immensely.

Led by the association's chairman, Peter Otieno, the importers are now calling on the government to pay the debts that have been piling up since February 2025. ''The government has not paid the suppliers, so they cannot print the logbooks and the number plates in Ruaraka.

You cannot remove the vehicle from the CFS without these documents.
