Turkana County Government has taken a proactive step to address concerns arising from illegal mining activities in Kainuk, Naduat, and Suguta areas.

In a stakeholders' meeting convened to tackle environmental and community issues linked to mining operations, Deputy Governor Dr John Erus emphasized the importance of public participation. "We must focus on public participation, land rights, environmental protection, and ensuring that local communities benefit from mining activities," he said.

County Executive Committee Member for Tourism, Culture, Natural Resources and Climate Change Leah Audan Lokaala stated that the county would implement a vetting process for all investors to prevent unlicensed operations. "No mining should proceed without community consent," she said.

County Attorney Ruth Emanikor highlighted the sector's potential for economic development, urging compliance with national and county regulations. "Adherence to the law ensures investments benefit the local communities and allows us to evaluate their economic contributions effectively," she said.
