The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Nyamira branch has announced that nurses in the county will down their tools on Tuesday, May 13, at midnight. In a press briefing on Monday, May 12, the union stated that the Nyamira County Government should act swiftly and address issues affecting the nurses, including unfavourable working conditions, salary delays, and the promotion of doctors, before the strike starts. The union has noted that the delay of salaries, which to some has extended by 10 months, has led some nurses to lack basic necessities such as transport and in turn crippled their ability to deliver quality healthcare to residents in the county. "We, as the leaders of the KNUN Nyamira Branch, are here to announce a strike that will start on Tuesday.
The county should ensure that all nurses who are to be promoted are promoted.
The county should ensure that all the nurses are redesignated, especially those who have done a degree," one of the union leaders said.
