The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced on Monday, March 31, that nine petrol stations selling adulterated and export-bound fuel were closed after tests were conducted in 1,360 petrol stations between January and March.
In a notice published by EPRA on Monday, the authority noted that 1,347 were found compliant, while 13 were non-compliant and received varying penalties, including closure.
“During the period January- March 2025, a total of 5,978 tests were conducted at 1,360 petroleum sites. From the tests, 1347 (99.04%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from Thirteen, 13 (0.96%) sites turned out to be non-compliant,” part of the notice read.
Among the 13, three were closed for selling diesel meant for export, including Wamuini Petrol Station in Endebess and Mungatsi Filling Station. A third one was later reopened after paying accrued taxes of Ksh111,025.
Two other stations were also reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh306,092 and Ksh148,407. They were found selling diesel fuel high in sulphur and domestic Kerosene adulterated with non-marked fuel, respectively.

The other three were the Kobedo Filling Station in Homa Bay, the 61 Bus Filling Station in Embakasi Central, Nairobi, and the El Bethel Filling Station in Marsabit.
An illegal Fuel Site in Mazeras, Kilifi, was also closed, and suspects were arrested after being found storing diesel and adulterated fuel with domestic kerosene in drums.
The notice concluded with a message to the public to report any suspicious activities via its official hotline operational only during normal working hours.
EPRA also advised Kenyans to access a full list of all sites found with adulterated products in the past on its official website.
"Members of the public are requested to report suspected cases of petroleum fuels adulteration or export dumping through the hotline number as well as use the Authority's USSD code (*3637) and SMS service code (40850)," the notice read.
The Authority conducts continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport and storage throughout the country and lists all compliant and non-compliant ones every three months.
