Nyoro wants mathematics made core subject in senior secondary education

The ongoing national discussion about the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and proposals to make mathematics optional at the Senior Secondary School (SSS) has elicited diverse opinions from various education stakeholders and policy makers.

Some stakeholders have argued that mathematics should be a major subject in the senior secondary schools and not optional as the Ministry of Education proposes.

He further highlighted the critical role mathematics plays in equipping students with essential skills for the modern world particularly in science, technology and engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The MP stressed that STEM courses are central to global opportunities and innovation adding that Kenya must align its education system with these trends to remain competitive.

“The world is embracing new technical innovations and digital transformations. All this needs basic knowledge in mathematics and our country cannot be left behind by making the subject optional especially in senior secondary schools,” he added.

While acknowledging the value of Arts education, having studied arts himself, he underscored the fact that mathematics and sciences are vital for preparing students for the demands of modern technology.

The legislator also pointed out that the modern world increasingly revolves around technological and scientific advancements where mathematics is highly applied.
