Several people are feared dead after an early morning accident on Saturday, April 5, involving a bus and a lorry ferrying bread on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the mangled wreck of the lorry and the bus, which was heavily damaged on the front side.

The cause of the accident has not been officially established, but preliminary reports indicate it was a head-on collision. The bus, believed to be ferrying passengers, was coming from Mombasa and was headed to Port Victoria, Kisumu.

The aftermath of the accident resulted in loaves of bread scattered on the road, with rescue efforts ongoing.

An official report on the number of casualties and injured persons is yet to be released, but unconfirmed reports indicate that the driver of the lorry was one of the victims.

The latest incident came just hours after an accident involving a Tahmeed bus that crashed into a PSV matatu on the night of Friday, April 4.

According to witness accounts, the accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. when the bus, traveling from Mwembe Tayari, encountered mechanical issues while going uphill and rammed into a Mikindani matatu at the Kibarani Flyover.

The bus's brakes are said to have failed, causing it to reverse and hit the matatu, which belonged to the Miritini Sacco.

"Seated at the back of the matatu, I was watching the traffic when I suddenly saw a passenger jump off the bus. Instinctively, I followed and jumped off as well. It was only then that I realized the bus had crashed into the front part of our matatu. At the same time, a bodaboda rider and his pillion passenger narrowly escaped as they jumped before impact," narrated one of the survivors.

The two accidents come after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, April 3, urged all stakeholders in the road transport sector to implement measures that enhance road safety.

The Authority sounded the alarm over the recent accidents, which have largely been attributed to reckless driving.

To mitigate the risks now that students are at home for the holidays, the NTSA announced that there would be a special focus on the behavior of PSV drivers and conductors, with those who flout traffic rules potentially facing serious repercussions.
