Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers, in collaboration with the General Service Unit (GSU), have launched a manhunt for suspected Al-Shabaab militants who attempted to ambush a local GSU camp in the area.
This is after dozens of the militants launched an ambush on the GSU camp located within the Basuba area in Boni Forest.
The assailants are reported to have detonated two rocket-propelled grenades at the camp, prompting a heavy gunfight between the security agencies in the area and the militants.
Police managed to recover an AK-47 rifle believed to have been left by the assailants during the escape.
However, details remain scanty as to whether there were injuries or fatalities during the heavy gun exchange, which lasted for a better part of Saturday night.
Local authorities, however, assured that there were no injuries on the part of the GSU officers whose camp was stormed.
The militants were repulsed and escaped to Kiangwe Forest, where the multiagency team is actively involved in their pursuit as the search continues.
The multiagency team operating in the area has mounted traffic checks along major roads within the region to ensure that the insurgents are nabbed.
Lamu County Commissioner Wesley Koech appealed for calm among the residents of Lamu County as the security officers intensified the search.
Lamu County has been relatively calm, with few incidents of attacks on both the citizens and the authorities following the deployment of a multiagency team of security officers in the region.
The multiagency team is mainly comprised of officers from the KDF, GSU, Special Operations Group (SOG), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), and Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU), among other premier security units.
The government is yet to respond, however, to the latest incident that has left the residents of the affected area in fear.
