Over 50,000 victims of historical land injustices in Laikipia are living in fear of losing their ancestral land to private investors through displacement.
They claim that if the National Land Commission (NLC) fails to address the longstanding grievances on land issues in the county on time, nearly a million acres of land will be in the hands of the investors against the 2010 constitution, which would leave them as squatters.
The community decried that despite numerous appeals to NLC since 2021 when they first submitted their claims; no progress has been witnessed.
Speaking in Mayanat community land, Mukogodo East, they highlighted that historical land injustices claims submitted to NCL met the threshold for hearing and investigation. ''With the struggles we have encountered on the issues of historical land injustices, we thank the 2010 constitution since it enabled those victimised to get proper direction on how to address such land conflicts," said Edward Ramat, Livestock direct organisation Director, Paaran Alliance, an institution that support local communities in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands access justice and end land related conflicts.
