The police officer who was caught on camera shooting a mask vendor in Nairobi will now face murder charges.
Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa, who was interdicted immediately after the incident went viral, will now undergo a mental test before he answers whether he killed Boniface Kariuki Mwangi. Masinde appeared before High Court Judge Kanyi Kimondo, who ordered that he be escorted to either Kenyatta National Hospital or Mbagathi Hospital, where he will be assessed to determine if he is mentally sound to stand trial. The officer and his colleague, Duncan Kiprono, were previously charged with grievous harm following the fatal shooting, which was captured on video by onlookers.
One of the officers was seen in the video raining blows on Kariuki then shooting him in the head at close range as he walked away.
His colleague was also seen assaulting the 22-year-old.
