The construction of the stalled Sh10 billion Kakamega Level IV Referral Hospital is set to resume next week following the official handover of the project to the national government under the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). Construction of the 750-bed-capacity facility in the Western region stalled four years ago. However, last year, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa successfully engaged with President William Ruto for the National government to take over the project, which he said, once completed, would improve the provision of healthcare and create jobs. Governor Barasa, together with Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga and Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, reaffirmed the government's commitment to complete the facility in the next six months.
