Former US President Barack Obama could be staring at treason charges should President Donald Trump's administration decide to press charges related to what Trump has claimed was a coup attempt during the 2016 election.

President Trump has ignited fresh political controversy after accusing his predecessor of orchestrating efforts to overturn his election victory, linking the accusation to renewed investigations into the late Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking case.

The statement, delivered during a meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

at the White House, followed an announcement by Trump's Department of Justice that Epstein's long-time associate Ghislaine Maxwell would be questioned again in prison.  "No lead is off-limits," Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche declared, signalling a wide-ranging probe into Epstein's network.
