The Ministry of Health on Sunday announced that the ministry had temporarily paused the Social Health Authority (SHA) overseas package to allow for key changes to take effect.
For the next 30 days, patients seeking SHA assistance will have to wait as the ministry upgrades the system that seeks to have more Kenyans Key to these changes is that SHA will only cover overseas treatments not available in Kenya, a move that is expected to incentivise patients to seek treatment locally.
Speaking on Sunday, the health cabinet secretary Aden Duale relayed that several treatments frequently sought abroad, including PET scans, advanced imaging, kidney transplants, open-heart surgeries, and joint and spinal injuries, were now available in Kenya.
Additionally, the overseas hospitals must be formally contracted by SHA, hold accreditation in their home country and recognition in Kenya for patients to be qualified for the coverage.
