Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, February 5, endorsed Fred Matiang'i as the presidential candidate for the Jubilee party to challenge President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 polls.
During a high-level meeting between senior officials that included Kenyatta, Matiang'i, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, former Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, former ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru, and former head of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Andrew Wakahiu, reports revealed that Uhuru supported Matiang'i's candidature instructing him to speed up his campaign efforts in the country.
In the meeting that also included Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Uhuru gave direction to Matiang'i to close ranks with other political leaders opposing President Ruto's administration, amongst them Rigathi Gachagua. "They (Uhuru & co) said that they would be happy if Kenyans would accept Matiang'i as their Jubilee presidential candidate," Kioni stated. Former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i during a past interview.
