Construction works at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega County is on track in readiness for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya has also confirmed that Masinde Muliro stadium in Kanduyi sub county in Bungoma are undergoing final touches, with the two expected to be venues for the AFCON 2027 football extravaganza.
Speaking during a tour of Bukhungu stadium's construction site, the CS who was accompanied by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said the government was satisfied with construction progress to ensure the facility meets the required international standards. "Apart from Bukhungu, we have Kanduyi stadium in Bungoma that is 90% complete and we are currently fitting 10,000 seats," said the CS.
Mvurya said there will be periodic reviews of the Bukhungu stadium to ensure its completion by June 2027 as directed by President William Ruto while on a tour of the facility last January. "These are some of the flagship projects in the region and key to talent development," he added.
