The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has expressed it sadness following the demise of its former Chairman Wafula Chebukati which occurred today at a Nairobi hospital.  Mr Chebukati, aged 63 who passed on while receiving treatment, had served as Chairman of IEBC for six years from 2017 to 2023.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the Commission's Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Marjan Hussein, said the IEBC family has lost a great leader who was full of humour, a good listener on issues affecting the delivery of the Commission's mandate and a man who understood the sensitivity of his office.

During his tenure, Chebukati oversaw the conduct of two General Elections, in 2017 and 2022 and one repeat Presidential Election in 2017. "The Commission recounts with the rest of Kenyans, the good memories and acknowledges the impact that the Chairman had as he diligently served the office," said Marjan.

He noted that his commendable achievements led the Commission to be awarded the winner of the Election Management Award and runners up in the Electoral Ergonomic Award during the 19th International Electoral Awards at a ceremony held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2023.
