President William Ruto, then Deputy President, sued Johnstone Muthama (former Machakos senator), James Orengo (Siaya governor), Boni Khalwale (Kakamega senator), Elizabeth Ongoro (nominated MP) and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed after they accused him of grabbing the land.

In his case, Ruto said he was a clean and law-abiding citizen.

He added that no one had ever complained to the authorities about him and the land circus. " The plaintiff (Ruto) avers that he is not in any way connected with the alleged land grabbing as postulated by the defendants," said Ruto through his lawyer, Kioko Kilukumi.

Ruto said that statements by the then five Coalition for Reforms and Democracy leaders during a political rally greatly injured his reputation.
