American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new Pope of the Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, after a papal conclave that spanned two days and four rounds.
Cardinal Prevost chose the name Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th head of the Catholic Church and succeeding the late Pope Francis.
Prevost's election was historic, as he became the first American to ascend to the papacy in the long history of the Catholic Church.
Interestingly, he also becomes the second consecutive Pope from the Americas, following his predecessor, Pope Francis, who hailed from South America.
