The Kenya Forest Service has declared an impending fire season in Machakos since all vegetation is drying up and exposing forests to fire hazard.
According to Machakos Forest Conservator, Milka Mutua, the extreme dry season has pushed them to declare the fire season from the 4th of March 2025 until the onset of the rains.
While speaking to KNA she noted that burning of slashed materials by farmers on their farms exposes neighbouring forests and private property to risks of catching fire and spreading. "It is in consideration of these factors that this office has deemed it necessary to declare the fire season in Machakos with effect from 4th of March up to the onset of the rains," said Milka.
The Forest Conservator also urged Machakos residents and farmers to give a 48-hour notice of their intention of burning any vegetation adjacent to the forest, she added that smoking of cigarettes within the forests is prohibited and they should ensure to report any fire detected to any government office in the shortest time possible.
