The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has released an update on investigations into the deaths, injuries and property damage during the Gen Z protests across Kenya last year.

The ODPP reviewed inquiry files  submitted by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) regarding incidents involving civilians and law enforcement during the nationwide demonstrations. "Upon receipt and review of the files, the ODPP gave various directions including closure of some, further investigations by IPOA and/or the Inspector General of the National Police Service, where appropriate, in accordance with the law," said the ODPP.

The statement highlighted specific cases, including the fatal shooting of a journalist, Dominic Wanjala Mutua, who was reportedly struck by a teargas canister on June 18, 2024.

The file was sent back to IPOA for further investigation, including verification of a video allegedly showing the officer firing the canister.
